Rethink 2011

I heard about the Rethink Scholarship from a tweet by Pia Roxas. I really didn’t know it was a scholarship up until the end of the recruitment AVP. Yeah, I didn’t know it was a call for entries video until the end. I found out about this at around April, I think. I immediately gave up. What chance do I have with the amazing freaks of the design world? I have not training, I’m crap. The Rethink Scholarship basically asks you to send out a scketbook of ideas to Canada. If you get selected you’ll be given a scholarship to Langara College’s Communication and Ideation program along with an internship at Rethink, a creative and strategic firm for all mediums (media) of communication. More than just advertising, they pride themselves in idea generation. (See video)

And after a serious of life-evaluating events I said, “What the heck?” There’s nothing to lose from trying. So I made a calendar by June 24th, it would have been bound and on it’s way half way across the world.

It is now June 25th and my entry is halfway across my living room, staring at me, saying I missed my deadline. You see, I had three weeks to do this. I can say excuses like I’m not being paid to conceptualize during work or I’m tired when I get home so what came as the result could have been better if I just came off my lazy ass and did it. But, I won’t.

I am extremely proud of it. Sure, with more time I can tweak it to my liking but I am still extremely proud of what 3 weeks of thinking and 24 hours of doing can come out with. I am sending this on the 25th, just a few hours from now and I am praying for a fighting chance at this.

Pictures of the work below. Couldn’t scan the final piece anymore so I just took semi-wobbly shots from my phone.

Most parts were done by hand and scanned and laid out. After printing, I preferred to add detail and scribbles by hand. I’m not that familiar with Illustrator yet.

If you’ve noticed the heart page (Strike a Chord. Go Deep). That was supposed to be a 1/2 thick piece of paper with an anatomical heart etched through. And you could really strike a chord, more like plunk a rubber band. Anyway, because of time constraints, I scanned and put lines over it instead and sewed thread to add texture.

Here’s a few close-ups on details on some pages:

The Loosen Guru is actually one of my favorite pieces for this set.

I hope I’ll have the time to reprint a copy for myself. Here’s to my hopes in one small package!

Cheers!

Sheens :)
